Founding member of the CEBB (European Center of Biotechnology and Bioeconomy, co-funded by the ERDF, the Région Champagne Ardenne (now Région Grand Est), the Département de la Marne and Reims Metropole) located near Reims (France) and member of the IAR cluster as well as the SFR Condorcet, Chaire ABI is a new research and teaching unit of AgroParisTech dedicated to the valorisation of agro-resources and biorefineries byproducts.

With expertise in white biotechnologies, green chemistry and process engineering, our scientists work on multi-disciplinary basic and applied research projects aiming at the development of new industrial processes allowing the transformation of these « agro-wastes » into high value added chemicals such as biopolymers, functional additives or cosmetics.

White Biotechnologies

Our microbiologists take advantage of the great diversity of microorganisms to develop innovative ways to produce biomolecules. Using liquid and solid-state fermentation processes, our microbiologists convert agro-resources and biorefineries by-products into platform chemicals.

Green Chemistry

Biocatalysis, non-conventional solvents (e.g., ionic liquids), micro-wave assisted synthesis are some of the sustainable tools used by our organic chemists to convert biomass-derived molecules into bio-based platform chemicals and end-products.

Process Engineering

Efficient (bio)chemical processes require high performance separation processes. Our expertise covers sustainable purification techniques for reaction products isolation, solvents recyclability and valuable components recovery from waste and secondary streams.

Facilities - Equipments

Analytical Chemistry
To support our scientific team, our vast analytical park includes liquid (DAD, Corona, DWD, RI, DWD, viscosimeter, MALS) and gas chromatography (MS), spectroscopy (UV, FT-IR, Fourier 300 NMR system) and thermal analysis (TGA and DSC systems).

Organic Chemistry and Polymers
Our chemical laboratory not only includes classical apparatus but also top-of-the-art equipment such as automated flash chromatography equipment with UV and ELSD detectors, multi-syntheses reactors, MBraun solvent drying system and a brand new microwave system.

Downstream Processing
Our separation and purification facility is mainly equipped with a lab scale METcell cross-flow system suited for ultra (UF), micro (MF), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) separations, and with a membrane contactor for liquid-liquid extraction.

Our microbiology lab is composed of 5L fermentors for liquid-state fermentations as well as a flow cytometry analyser. It also includes solid-state fermentation facilities such as a non-stirred thermostated chambers and a halogene moisture analyser. Our microplates readers enable us to perform high-throughput screening.
